31 dead in stampede at Hindu festival in India

ALLAHABAD, India (AP) ? An official says the death toll from a stampede during a Hindu festival in northern India has risen to 31.

Medical superintendent Dr. P. Padmakar of the main state-run hospital said Monday that at least 30 other pilgrims were injured in the crush at the main rail station in the pilgrim city of Allahabad.

Padmakar said 23 of the dead were women.

Tens of thousands of people were in the station when a section of a footbridge there collapsed, leading to the stampede late Sunday.

A stampede killed at least 10 people and injured a dozen more in an Indian train station flooded with people during a Hindu festival that attracts millions.

Indian Railway Minister Pawan Bansal said the stampede happened in the Allahabad train station on Sunday evening. News reports said tens of thousands of people were in the station when a section of a footbridge there collapsed, leading to the stampede.

Indian media outlets reported higher tolls later, saying about 20 people died and 30 others had been injured.

Television showed large crowds pushing and jostling at the train station as policemen struggled to restore order.

"There was complete chaos. There was no doctor or ambulance for at least two hours after the accident," an eyewitness told NDTV news channel.

An estimated 30 million Hindus were expected to take a dip at the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganges, the Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers on Sunday, one of the holiest bathing days of the Kumbh Mela, or Pitcher Festival. The festival lasts 55 days and is one of the world's largest religious gatherings.

The auspicious bathing days are decided by the alignment of stars, and the most dramatic feature of the festival is the Naga sadhus ? ascetics with ash rubbed all over their bodies, wearing only marigold garlands ? leaping joyfully into the holy waters.

According to Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela celebrates the victory of gods over demons in a furious battle over nectar that would give them immortality. As one of the gods fled with a pitcher of the nectar across the skies, it spilled on four Indian towns_Allahabad, Nasik, Ujjain and Haridwar.

The Kumbh Mela is held four times every 12 years in those towns. Hindus believe that sins accumulated in past and current lives require them to continue the cycle of death and rebirth until they are cleansed. If they bathe at the Ganges on the most auspicious day of the festival, believers say they can rid themselves of their sins.

Broncos, John Elway have enough room to play smart in NFL free agency

Today's question about the Broncos comes from Estuardo Zepeda from Mexico:

Q: Is there any chance that the highest-paid Broncos (Elvis Dumervil, Champ Bailey, Peyton Manning) restructure their deals to provide more flexibility to the team? And with Wesley Woodyard on board, is D.J. Williams out? What salary cap penalties would apply if the Broncos cut him?

A: Estuardo, there is always a chance a team asks its highest-paid players to re-structure deals to help its cause, but the Broncos aren't in dire cap circumstances compared to some in the league.

They aren't among the teams with the most room either, but they have room to do a few things if they wish.

A look at the figures, before they've made any roster moves heading into free agency, shows they have roughly $14 million to $15 million worth of room if an $11.5 million "rollover" from this year is included and some pending bonuses are added in. With the collective bargaining agreement signed in 2011, teams have the option of rolling over cap room from the previous year into the next year.

It aided the Broncos' ability to sign Manning before this past season and will constitute the bulk of their cap room this year.

A look through their contract figures shows they sit at $119.6 million worth of cap commitments right now, including all bonuses, for the 2013 season. The salary cap won't officially be set for another few weeks, but most in the league expect a pretty flat increase compared to this past season.

In 2012 the salary cap was just above $120 million per team and it is expected to come in at around $121.1 million per team in the coming year. So, the Broncos will certainly make a few cuts, re-do a deal or two to trim the $119.6 worth of commitments before free agency opens and will have the ability to add the rollover room.

The Broncos also have very little dead money at the moment ? 2013 salary cap money committed to players no longer on the roster. They come in at less than $100,000 in dead money. That shows the fruits of a draft-first strategy and why the team has used far more one-year deals with late signings in free agency than other teams.

As of last week, there were nine teams above the projected salary cap for 2013, including the NFC champion 49ers. The Jets are in the worst cap shape for the upcoming year, with the Saints and Cowboys not far behind ? all are already at least $20 million over the projected cap figure.

The playoff teams in the best shape are Cincinnati and Indianapolis with both having at least $40 million worth of room if they use all of the rollover space available to them.

So, the Broncos are on solid footing, especially for a 13-win team. They have the ability to keep themselves in the playoff mix if they continue to carefully use their cap room and, as John Elway puts it, "stack good draft on good draft."

If they use the franchise tag on left tackle Ryan Clady, that's a guaranteed one-year deal for $9.66 million, so that's a big chunk of the current room if they don't elect to go with a long-term deal given his recent shoulder surgery.

Their biggest cap hits, beyond Manning, come on defense. Bailey's cap figure for 2013 is $10 million, including roster and workout bonuses. Dumervil has a $13.623 million cap figure, including a $10 million base salary, which the Broncos could turn into signing bonus in some way if they try to re-structure.

Also with the Broncos is former high-profile agent Michael Sullivan, who oversees the Broncos' work with contracts and the salary cap. Sullivan is highly-regarded in the league for his abilities.

Overall, D.J. Williams' status will certainly be addressed in some way, either by his release or a significant contract reduction. He was a situational player only last season who missed nine games because of two league suspensions.

His cap figure for 2013 is $7.732 million ? the final year of his deal ? that includes a $6 million base salary. The Broncos re-did the deal some in 2010, converting a portion of a roster bonus into signing bonus.

If they release Williams, he would carry $1.732 million cap charge for the remaining pro-rated amount of his signing bonus. But that is a savings of $6 million over his cap charge if he's on the roster, so it's a move they would certainly consider.

Since the start of the 2010 season Williams has earned $13.57 million in base salary alone from the Broncos ? a total that doesn't include any of his signing bonunses. He was not starter when he returned from suspensions and has not earned a Pro Bowl nod in any season.

Democrats optimistic on 'broad' support for universal gun background checks

Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Ted Cruz, R-Texas weigh in on the gun control debate raging in Washington with Schumer calling the universal background check the "sweet spot" both sides support.

Hours before President Barack Obama's official swearing-in to a second term, top Democrats predicted a victory for the broadest component of the White House's push to change the nation's gun laws.?

During an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Sen. Chuck Schumer, N.Y., called legislation to?institute universal background checks for gun buyers?"the sweet spot."?

"In terms of actually making us safer and having a good chance of passing, this is it," Schumer said on Sunday.?

"I think you're going to see [the very likelihood] in the next week or two a proposal that has broad support for universal background checks," he added.?

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, argues for a return to the assault weapons ban and backs the president's executive actions.

Schumer's confidence echoed the comments of White House senior adviser David Plouffe, who said on CNN Sunday that he's confident the president will have the votes in Congress to pass key parts of his gun control agenda because public opinion has shifted in the wake of the Newtown school shooting last month.?

"Newtown has changed the debate," Plouffe said. "Sadly, it took a tragedy like that, but you?re seeing a lot of people -- by the way Democrats and Republicans -- think differently about this issue since this tragedy."

"I think there's 60 votes in the Senate and 218 votes in the House if votes will come up for some of these gun safety measures like clips, like universal background checks, absolutely," he added. "There is a consensus in America on this, and I think we can get there here on Capitol Hill."

Obama unveiled a sweeping proposal last week that included the background check measure, limits on the capacity of ammunition clips, and a ban on assault weapons. Supporters of the plan point to overwhelming public support for the background check legislation; the assault weapons ban is far more divided along partisan lines.?

Freshman Sen. Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, said that Obama has exploited the mass shooting in Newtown in order to pass a pre-existing legislative agenda that caters to his political base.?

"This is not designed to actually solve the problem of violent crime. This is designed to assuage liberal partisans" on the issue of gun control, he said on Meet the Press.?

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, argues President Barack Obama took advantage of the mass murder that occurred in Conn. to push further gun control measures.

?

Cruz questioned the need to place further restrictions on gun shows, where critics say it is too easy to buy a firearm.?

"There actually isn't the so-called 'gun show loophole.' That doesn't exist," he said. "Any licensed firearm dealer who sells at a gun show has to have a background check."?

Another Republican senator suggested Sunday that the gun legislation may not even come up for a vote in the United States Senate, where Democratic leader Harry Reid faces tough politics when it comes to swing-state Democrats who are up for re-election in 2014.?

"I would really welcome the opportunity to have a fair and open debate on that?in the United States Senate," ?said Sen. John Barrasso of Wyoming on CNN.

"But I don't think Senator Harry Reid even brings it to the Senate floor because he has six Democrats up for election in two years in states where the president received fewer than 42 percent of the votes."?

Kindergarten Student Suspended For Pink Bubble Gun Threat In Pennsylvania

In the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, primary schools across the country are cracking down on gun-related threats.

Last week, in Mount Carmel, Penn., a 5-year-old kindergarten student was suspended from school after she allegedly said she would shoot her classmate, and then herself, with her pink "Hello Kitty" bubble gun, according to multiple local reports.

Parents of the kindergartener are seeking to fight the suspension, since their daughter did not have the bubble gun with her at the time the remark was made on Jan. 10. Their attorney, Robin Ficker of Bethesda, Md., said school district officials labeled the girl a "terrorist threat" after the incident, according to the Associated Press.

The kindergartener was waiting in the bus line with two friends when she made the remark about her pink bubble gun. The next day, officials at Mount Carmel Area Elementary School allegedly questioned the student for three hours about the incident without her parents' knowledge, local news outlet the Daily Item reports.

According to central Pennsylvania's PennLive.com, the kindergarten student was initially suspended for 10 days, but the suspension was reduced to two, after her mother addressed the issue with the school's principal, Susan Nestico. Despite the reduction, Ficker and the family are seeking a full expungement of the suspension, along with a public apology.

?This logic, which was not said in malice, came from the mind of this beautiful 5-year-old child who was playing with her friends, whom she hugs every day,? Ficker told the Daily Item. ?And this shows how hysterical people who work at schools have become since Sandy Hook.?

Gun control and school safety have become hot-button issues as the debate rages on over whether guards and teachers should be armed in public schools.

Addressing guns in schools, President Barack Obama recommended on Wednesday that school police be funded by the federal government, but he left the decision up to the schools on whether those guards should be armed or not.
